Living with lockdown: signposts for parents

My heart has always been for people, for connection, for growth and learning.

A mama dog and her puppy – because who doesn’t need to be reminded of cute dogs and motherly love at this time?!

In the past my passion was expressed through my job of 9 years as a Learning and Development Manager, and latterly as a masters-level qualified business and personal development Coach.

Even more recently I have found myself asked to do individual tutoring in English comprehension, French, and even Latin(!),

as well as teaching violin – all of which I have enjoyed immensely!

What do they say? ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’, and I can see that now is a time when we are all going to have to be a bit more inventive.

For some of us who are creative, lovers of learning, and adept at working with kids, it’s a bit scary but exciting and an adventure.

For others, it is the last thing they need! You may be feeling vulnerable, ill-equipped and daunted by the sudden change of lifestyle…even dreading extended time trapped with the ‘little darlings’! And that’s not to mention our other worries about actually getting ill, overcoming grocery shortages and fears about vulnerable loved ones.

Now is a time to be very gentle with ourselves.

If you are a perfectionist, drop the bar down a few notches straight away!

There is no way you can replicate a full school (especially secondary school!) timetable at home – you don’t have the resources, know-how, time, energy, space or equipment to do that. So don’t try! Set yourself up for success instead – and you and your child(ren) will be happier and less stressed as a result.

The schools will (I believe) provide work to do. We don’t know yet what that will look like. Some or most, or even all, will be online.

Let’s breathe and be patient.

Exams are now cancelled, and a few days or even a week of missed learning will be neither here or there in the long term, so Stay Calm and take time to make a plan .

I will be posting as many resources and pictures on here as I can gather and I will tag them so that they can be easily found.

This new way of life is going to evolve daily, and I hope that I can be a steadying, calm and informative harbour in the storm, and, to mix my metaphors a little, a lighthouse to guide the way.

Feel free to message me, or comment below, tell me what you need, are looking for, what your worries are and I will do my best to help or to connect you will someone who can.

With health-filled good wishes to you,
